This week’s global Starlink outage has exposed a hidden vulnerability affecting hundreds of UK businesses that rely on dynamically assigned IP addresses.
Many UK companies discovered that their business systems were suddenly unreachable because their IP addresses had changed. For firms using remote access, VPNs, cloud systems, or IP-based allowlists, this caused operational disruption and increased security exposure.
“Today’s outage caught many businesses off-guard,” said Peter Freeman, Technical Director of SimRush. “IP allowlists and persistent VPN tunnels are core security controls, but when an IP address resets, those controls fail and organisations are forced into emergency workarounds that are inherently less secure.”
SimRush has already received a surge in enquiries from businesses affected by the outage. Many companies rely on dynamic IP assignment from their ISP, which can change due to system updates, outages, or equipment relocation. Dynamic IP allocation used by Starlink is common across many networks, and businesses that require fixed IP addresses for secure remote access can mitigate this risk by using third-party static IP solutions.
“This outage demonstrates why businesses should plan for resilience and consider a true static IP, which provides both operational continuity and enhanced security,” added Mr Freeman.
Practical advice for businesses affected by IP resets:
- Avoid temporary workarounds that expose systems to the internet.
- Verify credentials and rotate admin passwords if emergency access was required.
- Restore IP allowlists and test VPN/remote access systems.
- Check monitoring and logging for gaps during the outage.
- Consider implementing a true static IP with multi-WAN failover for critical systems.
